As the country prepares to welcome the festival of lights, actress
Jonita Doda opened up about her Diwali traditions. Talking to us, she opened up about the deeper meaning the festival holds for her.
Speaking exclusively to ETimes, she shared how Diwali, for her, has always been “a celebration of life and light.”
Recalling her childhood memories, she said, “Growing up, my parents would ask how we’d like to celebrate — and instead of just bursting crackers, we’d spend time sharing sweets and smiles with people around us. It was always about spreading happiness, togetherness, and that beautiful festive spirit.”
Even today, she prefers celebrating Diwali at home with loved ones. “While Diwali parties and gatherings have become a part of the season, the main Diwali day is always spent at home — exchanging gifts, lighting diyas, and celebrating with close ones,” she added.
Jonita has completely given up on crackers
Jonita emphasized the importance of an eco-conscious celebration this Diwali. She shares,“I’ve completely given up on crackers, and I truly urge everyone to think about the environment.
Every cracker we burst adds to the pollution around us, affecting the air we breathe and the health of our planet.”
She further suggested an innovative approach for festive enjoyment, saying, “I wish the government would introduce city-wide fireworks displays — like in many Western countries — so we can enjoy the beauty without harming our surroundings.”
A festival of hope and gratitude
For Jonita, Lakshmi Pooja remains the most sacred part of Diwali. “It fills the home with such divine energy and gratitude,” she expressed, adding that the festival is incomplete without indulging in sweets like kaju katli.
“At its heart, Diwali is about the triumph of good over evil, light over darkness, and hope over despair. I wish for a blissful Diwali for everyone may light, love, and healing reach every home,” Jonita beautifully summed up her thoughts.
